Masonry. Lime. Dorset

Dorset has many different building materials making up the special character of the county. These being both stone and flint, chalk and cob as well as brick and oak. We endeavour to use lime mortar for all conservation work as well as for new build heritage masonry.

Cement can cause damp and damage soft masonry and lime and earth mortars by trapping moisture within the walls not allowing evaporation.

lim

Lime comes from Old English lim (sticky substance, birdlime, mortar, cement) and is related to Latin limus ('slime, mud, mire'), and linere ('to smear').
